Understanding the Color Wheel
Learn how hue adjustments work and how to use them effectively
The color wheel is a visual representation of how colors relate to each other. When you adjust the hue of an image, you're essentially rotating all colors around this wheel. For example, shifting the hue by 180° will turn red into cyan, green into magenta, and blue into yellow.
Complementary Colors
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel (180° apart) are called complementary colors. Shifting hue by 180° will transform all colors to their complements, creating a dramatic effect.
Analogous Colors
Colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel create harmonious combinations. Small hue shifts (±30°) can create subtle variations while maintaining a cohesive color palette.
Color Correction
Hue adjustment can be used to correct unwanted color casts. For example, if your image has a yellowish tint, a slight hue shift toward blue can neutralize it.
Hue Adjustment Examples

Negative Hue Shift
Shifting the hue in the negative direction creates a cooler color palette. This can be used to create a calming, serene mood or to correct warm color casts.

Normal Hue
The default hue setting preserves the original colors of your image. This is your starting point for adjustments.

Positive Hue Shift
Shifting the hue in the positive direction creates a warmer color palette. This can be used to create a vibrant, energetic mood or to correct cool color casts.
Pro Tips for Hue Adjustment
Get the most out of Snapied's hue control with these expert techniques
Combine with Saturation
Hue adjustments often work best when combined with saturation adjustments. After shifting the hue, you may want to increase or decrease saturation to achieve the perfect balance of color.
Use Subtle Shifts for Realism
For natural-looking results, use small hue shifts (±15°). Larger shifts can create dramatic, surreal effects that may be appropriate for artistic projects but can look unnatural for photographs.
Consider Your Subject
Be careful when adjusting hue in images with people, as skin tones can quickly look unnatural. For portraits, use very subtle hue adjustments or consider using selective editing to adjust only specific parts of the image.
Create Artistic Effects
Dramatic hue shifts can create striking artistic effects. Try shifting by 180° for a complete color inversion, or experiment with different values to find unique color combinations that match your creative vision.
