Reducing brightness creates a darker, more moody look. This can be effective for creating dramatic images, enhancing shadows, or setting a somber tone.
The default brightness setting provides a balanced exposure that works well for most images. This is your starting point for adjustments.
Increasing brightness creates a lighter, more airy look. This is perfect for brightening underexposed images, creating a high-key aesthetic, or enhancing details in dark areas.

Brightness and contrast work hand in hand. When increasing brightness, you might need to increase contrast as well to prevent the image from looking washed out. Similarly, when decreasing brightness, reducing contrast slightly can help maintain detail in shadows.
High brightness can cause "clipping" where the brightest parts of your image lose detail and appear as solid white. If you notice this happening, reduce brightness slightly or use other tools like Exposure or Highlights to fine-tune the brightest areas.
Different subjects benefit from different brightness levels. Portraits often look best with slightly higher brightness to illuminate facial features, while landscapes might benefit from a more balanced approach to maintain detail in both highlights and shadows.
Brightness is a powerful tool for setting the mood of your image. Higher brightness creates a light, airy, and often cheerful mood, while lower brightness creates a more dramatic, moody, or mysterious feel. Choose the brightness level that best supports the emotional impact you want your image to have.
